Understanding heart attack

A heart attack, medically known as myocardial infarction, occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle becomes blocked. This blockage often results from the formation of a blood clot in one of the coronary arteries, responsible for supplying oxygen-rich blood to the heart. The obstruction leads to  lack of oxygen in the affected part of the heart muscle, causing damage to the heart tissue.

The symptoms of an heart attack can vary but commonly include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and discomfort in the arms, neck, jaws, or back. Seeking prompt medical attention is crucial during a heart attack, as timely intervention can minimize damage to the heart muscle and improve recovery chances.

Several factors contribute to the risk of heart attacks, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and a family history of heart disease. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, involving a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco, can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks [2,3].
